Terms of Service

These Terms govern your use of the Subter identity directory (the “Service”) operated by [Company] (“we”, “us”). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Who may use the Service

You must be at least [age] and able to form a binding contract. You are responsible for activity under your account.

2. Accounts and handles

You choose a handle when you register. Handles are provided on an as-available basis; we may reclaim handles that are unused, infringing, impersonating, or abusive. Keep your account credentials secure.

3. Your keys are your responsibility

Subter is self-sovereign: your identity is controlled by cryptographic keys held on your device. We never receive your private keys and cannot recover them. If you lose your key material without a backup, your identity cannot be restored by us or anyone else. You are solely responsible for backing up and safeguarding your keys. See Keys & recovery.

4. Subscriptions and billing

Publishing and related write features require an active subscription; resolving (reading) is free. Fees, billing periods, and taxes are shown at checkout and processed by our payment provider. Subscriptions renew until cancelled; you may cancel at any time from your account, effective at the end of the current period. [Refund policy]. Lapsing removes you from discovery but does not delete your account.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• impersonate others or publish claims you cannot substantiate;
• attempt to verify domains or accounts you do not control, or abuse the verification endpoints;
• probe, scan, or attack the Service or use it to reach systems you are not authorised to access;
• use the Service for unlawful, infringing, or harmful purposes.

6. Public content

Content you publish (your document, keys, and verified claims) is public by design and may be freely fetched, cached, and re-shared by anyone. You grant us the rights needed to host and serve it. You are responsible for what you choose to publish.

7. Service “as is” & liability

The Service is provided “as is” without warranties. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential damages, or for loss arising from lost keys, and our total liability is limited to [amount / fees paid]. [Jurisdiction-specific terms].

8. Termination & changes

You may delete your account at any time (see Your data & privacy). We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms. We may update these Terms; material changes will be notified, and continued use constitutes acceptance.
